It is entirely possible to have multiple JVMs on your filesystem, and Vega is using Java 6 to run because that is what it finds where it expects to find Java. If you go to the console and type: find / -name java 2>/dev/null Then run each of them with the -version parameter, I'm sure you'll see you have a java 1.6.5 and a java 1.8.x. I suspect you'll need to set JAVA_HOME to the right location, such as /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.8.0.jdk/Contents/Home, possibly in your.bashrc (and then relogin), though I'm not sure if that path is correct, I don't have a Mac with me now to test.
