Request Receipts when Sending Single Message This option will send a request for a read receipt with a single message that is sent from your Outlook client. • While writing your message, select the “ Options” tab. • Under the “ Tracking” section, select the check box for one or both of the following: • Request a delivery receipt for this message • Request a read receipt for this message Request Receipts on All Sent Messages by Default These settings will control whether or not receipts are sent from your Outlook client when you send an email message. • From the main Outlook screen, select “ File” > “ Options“. • Choose “ Mail” in the left pane.

If it’s an Office 365 account, please check the “Mark as read” settings both in OWA(Outlook Web App) and Outlook for Mac client. In addition, you may configure another account on this mac to see if you can reproduce the same issue. In that case, even if I have Outlook minimized, it seems that Outlook automatically displays the new message in the reading pane and marks it as read right away. Unfortunately, since Outlook is minimized, I never even get a notification about a new message and don't notice it until I open up Outlook again. Outlook message read settings.
