★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This model is the latest generation of the many My Passport drives I've owned or purchased for clients for use on both PC and Mac computers. They have proven reliable and good performers and incrementally improved with each new generation. The ONLY difference between the Mac and PC versions is the initial formatting and pre-installed software suite (which can be downloaded from Western Digital). Getting the Mac version saves some time for the Mac user. Best review sites for computer mac peripherals. That's about it.This 2016 model features a new case design which has sharp 90 degree corners and a shiny finish that shows fingerprints and scratches easily. In my case I get these drives for how they work much more than how they look, but recognize others may feel differently.BOTTOM LINE (for the impatient):The new model is a little bit faster than last year's and includes the 4TB model.

A 4TB model to the previous generation My Passport Ultra for PC in early 2016, but the Mac specific version maxes out at 3TB.In practical use (copying a 11GB folder of mixed large/medium and small files back and forth) this speed improvement is just noticeable. With just large files reading/writing is more noticeable faster. I got the 4TB size. This matches my experience with the PC version which I tested with Crystal DiskMark. This 2016 model My Passport for Mac has a new design that replaces rounded corners with pointy ones and adds some odd (to me) styling to the case. A purely aesthetic change. The shiny surface collects fingerprints and mars/scratches easily. Other than outward appearance and the addition of a 4TB model it's functionally almost identical to the 2015 My Passport Ultra Mac model. If these differences are not important for you or you prefer the old model's aesthetics, you may want to get that one last year's My Passport Ultra Mac (only up to 3TB) depending on which is least expensive. Finding a quicken data file (quicken for mac).

If you want the older 4TB you'll need to get the PC model and reformat. You'll have an excellent drive in any case.If you want more details, read on.SUMMARY:The My Passport USB 3.0 drives are simple to use and come with reasonable software tools and backup/sync software. The drive includes software: WD Backup, WD Security and WD Drive Utilities. According to the manual these are compatible with Mac OS X versions Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra. I use Time Machine for backups with this drive and I have not explored the included software. If these are of interest, be sure to check for newer versions on the WD web site.Pluses:+ This drive works fine with Mac, Linux or Windows out of the box. With Linux or Windows it performs best when reformatted with a native file system for the respective operating system.+ This generation has 4TB, 3TB, 2TB, and 1TB models.

The 500GB sizes in previous versions has been dropped.+ This drive is faster than the last generation. Up to 10% faster in benchmarks, but just noticeable in practical use.+ The form factor of the new drive is almost exactly the same as before except for pointy corners and about a 1mm increase in thickness.+ Includes hardware encryption capability (I do not use this, but good for people who take their drive with them where it could get into the 'wrong' hands.Minuses:- It comes with the same very short USB 3.0 cable as previous versions. I like a longer 3ft (or more) USB 3.0 cable: a very good upgrade purchase for the My Passport drives.- The redesign of the drive case is not a plus for me. Not much of a minus either as it's not why I selected this drive. The worst thing is the pointy corners.

From a handling perspective rounded corners are nicer.- The warranty has been reduced from 3 years to 2 yearsIN THE BOX:The My Passport comes in a easy to open retail package containing the drive and a annoyingly short USB 3.0 cable. There are a couple small pieces of paper for warranty and quick-start. On the drive is software: WD Backup, WD Security and WD Drive Utilities. According to the manual these are compatible with Mac OS X versions Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan and Sierra. The cable in this model is the same as previous versions. This may be just fine for a lot of folks but I keep some 3ft (or more) USB 3.0 cables handy for longer runs and less constrained placement on my desktop.FORM FACTOR vs PREVIOUS GENERATION:I'll compare the new generation of My Passport with my 2015 My Passport UltraThis Model My Passport's dimensions:1TB: 0.37lb, 4.33in X 0.64in X 3.21in2TB-4TB: 0.54lb, 4.33in X 0.85in X 3.21in2015 My Passport Ultra's dimensions:500GB: 0.32lb, 4.33in X 0.62in X 3.21in1TB: 0.34lb, 4.33in X 0.62in X 3.21in2TB-3TB: 0.50lb, 4.33in X 0.83in X 3.21inTESTING:I did an 11GB subjective copy test on this drive.
