Text editors for the Mac are in abundant supply. I don’t know how many, but there are dozens; some simple, some complex, many free, and a few outrageously priced. Is one of the free text editors. A text editor doesn’t have fancy formatting tools and usually yields plain old text; good for coders, programmers, web developers, and those uninspired by complexity. Inspired By Microsoft What caught my fancy about TipTyper is the fact than someone dared to create yet another text editor (a few dozen for the Mac are also free), but that it was inspired by Microsoft’s Notepad.

It’s not that I have anything against Microsoft or Notepad (I do, but that doesn’t count), but I find it hard to be inspired. That’s not the case with TipTyper. It’s a plain text editor, but has a few features that make it worthy.

For example, like any good text editor, TipTyper displays line numbers, has a Go To Line feature, but also has a word counter. There’s a character counter, too, and the app even has a margin editor (available in the elegant little Toolbar at the top). Tabs can be inserted. There’s spell check and grammar, as well as dictation and speech options, plus smart indentation. TipTyper is probably aimed more at the casual coder who simply needs some clean, plain text devoid of formatting. That said, it’s not a bad option for the ‘small is beautiful’ and ‘less is more’ crowd of writers who want something simple, elegant, devoid of complexity, and mostly distraction free. Even the Preferences won’t be distracting.

There’s much to like about TipTyper– including the non-existent price tag– but it would be just as easily inspired by text editors other than the one Microsoft includes in Windows.
